Hi all
Quote from: JkDefrag HomePage
Directories are perhaps the most accessed data on disk
I think shorcuts is another type of most accessed files on the disk
It would be good to place them after the directories

I checked my laptop. There's 490 shortcuts which represent 498kb on the disk. It's a very small amount of data that can be easely placed to the end of zone 1.

As they are, on desktop, in the start menu, this feature will decrease access time Cheesy

What do you think of this?

Best regards, Laurent

Hi Myriades,

Interesting thought, that all shortcuts should be accessed frequently. Why do you assume this?

Anyway, small files are stored in the MFT record, so they don't occupy any clusters. Correct?

Hi Lundholm

so they don't occupy any clusters
Perform your usual defrag and then try this one after
Code:
jkdefrag x:\*.lnk -a5
You'll see that shorcuts are not only a record in the mft, but have to be stored like all other files
And i'm sure, after you have done the command above, your system will a little bit faster  Cheesy

I checked some shortcuts in my PC and found they vary much in size. Some are about 600 bytes each and I assume they are contained entirely in the MFT. Some are over 2000 bytes each and they do occupy disk space, don't they? It takes little time for the system to read in shortcuts after the HDD head has arrived at them, but it does take some time to get the head to move from one location to another.

Well, anyway, with the future ver. 4, we all will be able to define as many zones as we want to. We'll be happily editing scripts and defragging our drives in a way no other defragger has made possible.

Hello again Laurent,

You are right, JKD does in fact move some files. So now my shortcuts are how many mS faster? More important is, that disk head movements are reduced, so disk wear is reduced, but I still assume that most shortcuts are never or rarely used, so you create some disk wear by moving these shortcuts, which isn't really needed. The end result is negative, I think.  Wink

Maybe fuzzy logic would help. There is no white and black only. Let's assign weight to all characteristics of a file such as last access time, size etc. and shortcuts will bubble to the begining of the disk with some nonzero weight of size.

Exactly. I always recommend sort option 9, and now I can do it again. It will move popular shortcuts to the front and the others to where they should be.

Off topic : option 5 is very useful for micro optimization, though. I use it to optimize Firefox data like bookmarks and settings and cache, like this:

Code:
jkdefrag -a 5 "C:\documents and settings\<username>\application data\mozilla\*"
jkdefrag -a 5 "C:\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\mozilla\*"
