I created another test partition on my hard drive. I started your tool for defragmentation. I saw the status display "Starting JkDefrag for 'T:'" in the main application window for a while. I noticed the message "Error while opening volume '\\?\Volume{6130a7b1-6cea-11dc-a6a8-0015f2b2b0a9}' at mountpoint 'T:': [5] Zugriff verweigert" in the log file a moment later.

I would expect in an error situation like "file access denied" that a message box will be shown with the following options.
  • Retry
  • Skip partition
  • Cancel
I have tried to run the program without administrator rights. But the user group "software development" should have got all rights for this area as I have checked on the security tab for file properties in Windows Explorer.

I agree, a message box would be better for that situation. The problem however is that I have gone to great trouble to make JkDefrag completely automatic, because that is what I needed for myself. A popup box would negate that. Also, it is not always possible to differentiate between situations. For example, it is not always an error if a disk cannot be accessed, perhaps it's a floppy drive. In the future I am planning to make an interactive version of JkDefrag, with all the buttons and facilities that can be found in other defraggers, and then popup messages will be in order. But for now I want to keep JkDefrag completely automatic.

Windows has separate security properties for disks and for files. It is possible to have access to the files on a disk, but not to the disk itself.

Which command do you recommend to grant full optimisation access on specific partitions for other user groups?

I'm sorry, but I am not fluent enough in Windows security to tell you exactly what to do. I'm afraid you will have to figure out for yourself how to grant that userid permissions so it can run JkDefrag. All I can tell you is that JkDefrag is a standard Windows application and is governed by standard Windows security. JkDefrag contains a bit of code to try and get backup privileges (SE_BACKUP_NAME), but this is only needed for special files such as "C:\System Volume Information", and if it fails to get the privilege then it will quietly continue.
