Version 6 released!

All in first post!  Cheesy

Hello Jaspion, I've been using your scripts since v5.1 and I've just noticed a possible bug.

I've changed the lines in "CONFIGFILE System Drive Letter.txt" some time ago

from:
/* Process the C: disk. */
 VolumeSelect
   Name("C:")
 VolumeActions

to:
/* Select and process the volumes one by one. */
VolumeSelect
  CommandlineVolumes()
VolumeActions

in order to run your scripts in multiple MyDefrag instances on different physical disks,
but what happens is that only the first instance runs. There's no error msg nor pop-up from MyDefrag.

I've ruled out possible causes like the "OtherInstances" MyDefrag setting and running the default scripts on multiple MyDefrag instances - which do work.

I'm hoping you could shed some light on this mystery.

Grin I keep having new ideas. But I believe my scripts are close to a final version now.

Hi Esteban4u, the CONFIGFILE System Drive Letter is used only by the Jaspion Automatic Scripts. The Jaspion Automatic Scripts run the Jaspion System Scripts for the drive contained in this configfile (default C:) and the Jaspion Data Scripts for all other drives. Does that answer your question?

Hello! This discussion can be found here: http://www.mydefrag.com/forum/index.php?topic=5946.0

Yes, the issues we talked about are also valid for version 6.

Do you mean a games drive which is not the system drive and is also occupied by other non-gaming data (media, videos, etc)?

If your games are on your system drive, you can simply update the CONFIGFILE for Zone 3 adding your Steam folder(s). If I ever release a new version (I think v6.1 may be the final version), the CONFIGFILES are not likely to change, so you can simply continue using them and replace only the scripts with the new ones. And, like I said on the 1st post, if the CONFIGFILES do get updated by me you can use WinMerge to help update them.

If your games are on a non-system drive which has only games, you could use the Jaspion Data Scripts, but I'd recommend changing the system files positioning to something closer or equal to the value on the System Scripts.

Now, if it's the first case, maybe we can think of something to help. What do you think?

Think ill give that suggestion a try with the data scripts as i have one drive for games and one data as well system drive, ive tried to port your system script to a games script and that didnt go to well been a while since i made the scripts i use on my games drive. but what im doing for my current script is like this

Zone 1 MFT NTFS Specials
Zone 2 Directorys
Zone 3 Steam Program files no cache or game files
Zone 4 games in there own zones
Zone 5 steam game files accessed last 2 weeks and smaller than 1gb
zone 6 Big game files, Steam ".gcf" and ".ncf" files and savegames, and a gab
Zone 7 all other files

my idea of trying to port the system script was to make it more easy for me to update every month or so.

My idea for a games drive script would be something like this: place the games you will be playing regularly at the beginning of the disk, with SortByName on higher Levels, and leave the rest with basic defragmentation after a gap. This way, you'll be able to simply add games to the fastest zone (and have all game files equally accelerated so your game performs at top speed) when you play them, while leaving the rest of the games defragged but without too much data shuffling.

Using file access date can have quite random results. Also, take this example valid for this and prefetch: a big game with many different areas, and therefore tons of textures. You play this game, and you are in the storyline at a certain area of the game. The texture files for these areas will be placed in the fastest part of the disk, but what about the rest of the game? When you move to another area in the game, the loading won't be so accelerated. Plus, next time you defrag, you may see the first area's textures being removed from the fastest zone because they are no longer being used. But what if you return there later in the game? So my idea is always to accelerate what's important, even if you won't access it everyday, because you'll want speed any day.

Also this is valid for small files versus big files. When your game needs the big file, loading will be slow if this file is at a slow zone. So again this is why I would simply place all gaming data at the fastest zone for the relevant games, and add/remove games as I start and finish them.

This case-scenario is very interesting and elucidative. I will be updating the Jaspion Data Disk Scripts with a zone for the most relevant files to be placed at the beginning of the disk. I hope this will help you and possibly other users.

The initial version could be the greater one: MoveUpToZone in addition clears the zone via any non-selected files therefore the subsequent Defragment actions could ideally place the defragmented file with the right.

Sorry mroy559, could you make that clearer please?

antonyfrn, I believe my Data Disk Scripts will be able to serve you well. They will be upgraded shortly with the Priority Zone CONFIGFILE like the new version 7 System Disk Scripts, so you'll be able to select which files should be accelerated the most. Stay tuned for my next updates!

Hi Jaspion, I downloaded the new system scripts, but got confused by what you mean by 'facultative' Huh

Tried looking it up in dictionary, heheh.
facultative (comparative more facultative, superlative most facultative)
Of or relating to faculty, especially to mental faculty
Not obligate; optional, discretionary or elective
That grants permission or power to do something
(biology) Able to grow in or outside of a host or host cell

I must be understanding wrong what the CONFIGFILE 1 is for (facultative).
I assumed that's where I would add my game directories to, for fast gameplay.
But when I added to it:

 or DirectoryName("World of Warcraft")

It moved the directory after a lot of other 'Program Files' Directories

P.S.  after letting the script run for an hour anyhow, I checked the files that got moved (their dates). And I think the script is doing what it's supposed to:-)   Just a different zone layout, that moved my (priority) game directory to a little slower part of the drive:-)   As far as I can see sofar it will improve overall system performance for me.
Thanks for keeping to try to improve your scripts:-)
