Thank you Jeroen for your comments!
As you saw a chkdsk did not reveal any errors. Also all the SMART readings look fine too of the drive.
I wonder if I can do more testing if it indeed might be a harddisk hardware problem or not...
I can tell you I did format the drive myself to FAT32 with some special tool as windows itself only supports formatting up to 32 GB.

Perhaps the tool did a mistake or has a bug.

Why do you need FAT32 for this drive? I don't see any point today, since linux supports NTFS very well even on write access. I don't know how it is with MACs but I think they can also access and write to NTFS.

So what's the reason?

The reason is not really relevant but I'll tell you..I use the drive on my softmodded Wii which preferably deals with FAT32.
So there is a good reason for me.

Yes unfortunately I can not find any solution to get around FAT32 for you. :/

You could try to reformat the drive under linux, take a gparted boot disk and do it with gparted, it should work well.

Edit:

So you're assuming the formatting tool is to blame here for the crashing of MyDefrag and reformatting as FAT32 with gparted should solve this?

Yes, I it's just an idea and you should give it a try.

I did not analyze the log file, is your disk almost full? (> 50%)?
Is the time/effort for this okay?

When it does not take much time, you should copy the files,
then reformat with GParted to FAT32, then copy them back.

Additionally: As a nice side effect, the files are then defragmented. Wink

The disk is a little less than half full. I doubt formatting with gparted will make a difference but I might try.
I'll let you know when/if i do.

Ok.

It could also be a bug in the windows defragmentation API for FAT32, which is not maintained anymore.
At the time where the API was created for it, 15 GB drives where giant disks. Wink
