Hello,
I am a JK Defrag user from W98/ W2K days morphed into a MyDefrag user on XP and now W7 Enterprise.

I have been using MyDefrag on a Dell D410 with 2 Gigs DDr2 for over 2 years very successfully with both W7 and XP on different PATA drives.

Suddenly I am getting early termination with an Out of RAM error on the last 2 weekly runs. Sorry no screen shots.

This has never happened in all these years on any OS I have used. I have not checked Task manager, (I just realized that). but MyDefrag has worked fine on W7 for months now.

I am not screaming 'Memory Leak' here, I am seeking clarification and advice.
If someone can respond, I would appreciate that as I do not want to revert to the Windows Defrag or Defraggler or something like that.

I prefer MyDefrag under whatever name. It is unique, very different and extremely effective.
Thanks,

I re-crashed MyDefrag to gather information. Here is the Task Manager info I did not havee for this W7 MyDefrag crash post:

Ran fine until into zone 2 and then failed at around ~64% complete. Very high CPU to 96%~major spikes. RAM, (2 G available,) use spiked  to 1.5G then 1.7G and finally failed.

After crash fluctuations settled down, RAM use ~300M and CPU ~3-4%. (pretty much normal idle for this system),

Please advise if any one has any insight.
Thanks again,

Which version of MyDefrag do you use?
Does the error message say "Out of Memory" or "You have too may items"?

Try creating a debug log, see [FAQ]I have a problem! on how to do this.

And btw. why did you create a poll for this?

Thanks Darlis,
The reply is appreciated, and I will follow through and run a log to post  as soon as I can.

I have the latest version, (4.3.1). The error was 'Out of memory',  (not a direct quote. There are 10+ gigs of free space on all partitions and there was no reference to 'too many items'.

I had to enter something in those spaces to post or login, (I forget which now). I have no idea of the what or why of a 'poll', and I did not look it up. I just wanted a 'fix' on the problem and all obstacles were ignored or overcome quickly.

I had wondered whether or not the forum was derelict when after I saw the Uggs post.
Thanks again for the input,

Hi Darlis,
Here is the Debug Log:

<Memory full in function 'CreateItemPaths' in source '.\Items.cpp' on line 147.>

That is correct as Task Manager shows all RAM consumed. My issue is that this is a sudden onset error and the app has been working fine for months as is. What might cause these repetitive RAM-related  errors?

Again, thanks for the help,

Could you please post the first and last hundred lines of the debug log? Maybe there is some more information on the problem.

Usually MyDefrag shows a 'You have too many items' message if you don't have enough memory. You could try to remove temporary files with CCleaner and see if this solves the problem.

When lowering the number of items on that drive is no option, you have to upgrade the RAM and switch to 64 bit Windows 7, if you don't using 64 bit. Then this problem is 100% solved.

Hello,
I have been unable to get into the forum. I can usually access the site, but the forum link is dead for me in 3 different browsers--Opera, Firefox and IE9. (from both your emailed link, clicking http://www.mydefrag.com/forum button, and loading the URL into my browsers).  I finally got page load by downloading Chrome today. Java is enabled in all browsers. My MD account now does not work right now and I had to create a new account using an old email address.

I wipe the drives daily with CCleaner, (always). I also use Wise Disk Cleaner.  Free space is wiped with Revo as well, usually weekly. There are no disk clutter issues. the drives are cleaned regularly. I LIKE clean drives and well defragged ones!

MD has worked fine for ~3 years (perfectly) with this system, (W7 x32), and 2 g RAM, (that is the system limit). Processor is x32--no joy on x64 W7. No joy on a RAM upgrade, (impossible). MD has worked perfectly in x32 systems with less than a gig of RAM in the past. Never an issue.

System Disk (C:\) has 9 g free of 20. Data disk (E:\) has 40g free of 50g. There are no free space issues.

System and MD have been PERFECT until the last 2 weeks. I cannot increase RAM and cannot switch to x64 OS.

NEVER any problems with this system AS IS using MD or any other x32 app!

How do I access more than 1 line of the debug log? I just checked and the only other thing there is a repeat of the same log line cited above, that is from my previous failed defrag attempt.

Not yelling with the caps, just accenting the situation.
Thanks and please advise,

Hi,
Repeat on THE ONLY LOG FILE  that exists. This is from the last (2nd) failed defrag attempt. I did not delete anything but a duplicate of this from the first defrag attempt. There are no other log files apparent to me:

Memory full in function 'CreateItemPaths' in source '.\Items.cpp' on line 147.

Thanks,

You should definitely get more lines than just this one. Please check if you have uncommented "Debug(175)" in the Settings.MyD file (i.e. no "//" at the beginning of the line).
A lack of free space is definitely not the problem.

I have been unable to get into the forum. I can usually access the site, but the forum link is dead for me in 3 different browsers
Maybe that was only temporary? You don't need Java to access the forum, not even JavaScript for the most parts.

Hi and thanks,
I did get logged in this time on the new account Worked fine..

I just ran a <daily> defrag on System drive, (C:\); it ran fine using

1.06 to 1.09 g RAM and choppy CPU.

MD worked fine on system disk and failed again on a daily data disk run.

At Zone 2 on Data disk (E:\), I saw 1.91 G RAM use and much higher CPU. This disk is 80% empty. MD crashed at that point as follows:

ON SCREEN ERROR MESSAGE:
<oeps! Memory full. MD cannot handle this disk. It has too many items.>

[I did NOT see a '...too many items' error before].

Here is the drive analysis for E;\ (Data) from when the run started.

MD DRIVE ANALYSIS:
fragged items:  201.
unfragged items: 192.
total disk space: 58 5943 G.

AT TIME OF CRASH:
Zone 2
unfragged items: 8218.
fragged items: 1 item

LOG FILE (same as before):
<Memory full in function 'CreateItemPaths' in source '.\Items.cpp' on line 147.>

I have defragged this disk for weeks with no problems. I cannot find a longer error file in MyD or elsewhere. The posted bug message is the only such file found. There are no other lines, uncommented or not.

Please advise and many thanks,

Plase put a
Code:
Debug(487)
as the first line in the DataDiskDaily.MyD script. This should definitely create a bigger output.
MyDefrag shouldn't have any problems with just 8,000 items.

Something must have change on this volume. What I can think of is that MyDefrag is caught in a loop while selecting the directories (Zone 2). You could try to place a
Code:
ExcludeFiles( not( DirectoryPath("?:\*\*\*\*\*") ) )
just before the VolumeSelect and see if it helps.

Hi all,
Problem solved for now. I offloaded the folders with high 'file density' to an unused  Store partition and defragged both the original E:\ (Docs) partition and the new F:\ (Store)  partition successfully.

Here are the details and a few notes.

E:\ (Data):
Total disk space:      62,915,166,208 bytes           58.5943 GigaBytes
Unfragmented items:     6,090,608,640 bytes             7,924 items
Fragmented items:         223,977,472 bytes               186 items
Gaps:                  56,600,563,712 bytes             2,797 gaps
Average gap:               20,234,240 bytes
Median gap:                    36,864 bytes
Biggest gap:           33,271,582,720 bytes

Zone number:                        3
Unfragmented items:     5,890,113,536 bytes             7,733 items
Fragmented items:         223,977,472 bytes               186 items

RAM ~740  CPU ~15%
..............................................
F:\ (Store):
Total disk space:      10,487,197,696 bytes            9.7670 GigaBytes
Unfragmented items:     3,332,063,232 bytes            53,319 items
Fragmented items:                   0 bytes                 0 items
Gaps:                   7,155,249,152 bytes             3,891 gaps
Average gap:                1,835,008 bytes
Median gap:                     4,096 bytes
Biggest gap:            5,190,430,720 bytes

Zone number:                        3
Unfragmented items:     3,172,864,000 bytes            45,955 items
Fragmented items:                   0 bytes                 0 items

RAM: ~650 m to ~1.7 g  CPU higher and choppy.
...........................................................................

I will try later to locate the place to insert the suggested code if needed, but for now it is working fine.

I have defragged drives with far more items in the past and also with OS'es having much less RAM and never a problem with MD, so it may well be that it was stuck in a loop.

I really appreciate the help and suggestions, my friends. This has been a great forum experience for me. Your knowledge far exceeds my own (of course), and you stayed with me as things evolved!

Danke, und ein frohes Weihnachtsfest und alles Gute zum neuen Jahr!

[OK, I copied it off the web!
I wish I had taken German here, but the most useful option was Spanish as I live in Southern California. I use it all the time].
Nochmals vielen Dank

Hi,
Sorry for the delay and Merry Christmas to al,
I found the debug log (finally). I had another problem sending the post in a few days ago. Sometimes the send button does not work; at other times I cannot get the forum button to work. All is fine now though.

The original issue has not recurred since I moved files off the partition, but, (as you know), he volume of files was so small that there should have been no problem. Perhaps the attachment will shed some light on that,
Many thanks,
fallsofff

That looks like it's the well known "Program hints" crash. Look here for a solution.
This one doesn't have anything to do with your other problem.

Und dir auch fröhliche Weihnachten.  Wink
