I don't think owner of this forum actually cares about looking for a solution.

What really amaze me that you guys don't have any moderator rights. You could keep this forum cleaned until the right solution is found to stop the spambots.

This really draws new users away after they see all the spam..  Sad

Would you allow a stranger to moderate your forum and let him delete posts he considers spam?

Isn't that how it usually works on internet? At least I was once offered moderator rights on certain game forums (official game server, not private) without ever meeting anyone from there.
And moderators don't have to have rights to delete posts, they may just have rights to make such posts invisible or to move them to invisible section.

They just want to save costs.  Tongue But you have a point there, but it all depends on the forum owner if and who to choose as moderator.

In this case, hiding or moving is not possible. Moderators have (by default) the permission to delete posts.

this forum software could have a special user role, usually it is like so, IMHO:

moderator = can move, hide, edit (historized)
super moderator = can move, hide, delete, edit
admin = all rights

I have to (partly) correct myself: moving topics is indeed possible, even though the option is quite hidden. Hiding however, is not.

So it would be possible to have a moderator move topics to a hidden spam board.

This is the technique of asking a question of visitors that they have to answer before accessing the forum. The question can be anything you like, e.g. what is 9 divided by 3? or what colour do you get from mixing blue and yellow? The bots haven't a clue what to do unless they are programmed for your specific site. In which case, you just change the question! This works, whereas email verification and captcha methods are useless.

But there is nothing to fight. That's the point of the whole thread.

Just ask new users to solve simple math problems during registration and enter their answers. How hard is this?

Not hard enough against spam.
A simple math interpreter for addition and subtraction and there you go.

The problem might be that this forum version does not have such a feature build-in. It can be modded in but that also means that the forum might not work correctly after the modding and more time has to be spend recovering to the previous state.

Not hard enough against spam.
Works well on my forum, though.

Do you use bitmaps to show the math problem or just plain HTML text?

I think the best way how to get rid of spambots on this site is to set up mail notification about updates in Announcements section for the unlikely case of a new release and delete link to this site.
