I had a question concerning the default scripts included with 4.3.1
I niticed that the fee space, gaps, that go in between zones are based of the available, free space, and are also based on a percentage.

Wouldn't this cause a Lot of un-necessary shifting as data is written and deleted from the drive?

especially if used as the screen saver

one  TB drive, 1% of the free space can be a lot, and if at 5 in the morning I have 400 gig free, and at 9 at ngiht I then only have 350 ig free, it's going to move a bunch of data around simply to change the size of the gap wouldn't it?

My other question was that as I do have a Tb drive (well two 512 drives in a RAID array) and I do a LOT of data thrashing throughout the day,  in a given work day, the amount of data on my disk can change by 100 Gig in both directions easily.

I was thinking about increasing the gaps between zones, in order to give me a little more "working room" as it were.  but my understanding of the my defrag scripts is minimal at best, so I'm not sure if my concerns are even valid to begin with.

For those curious My comp plays the role of "media-dumpster" for 5 people in my house, all running torrents, and so forth, I myself, do 3D rendering, and machinima, I work with a lat of huge raw footage and high res movies/image, so as I work through the day, I'm creating 100+ gig files, then converting, editing, storing, reducing etc.  plus everyones movies, and linux ISO's and whatever the hell else my roommates download lol.

I don't mind it, i have the space, but the fragmentation can get pretty nuts.
any and all advice is appreciated.

Changing the gap sizes is simple, just look for the AddGap statements and change the numbers therein.
Look at the NUMBER help page to see what RoundUp does. It's used to prevent constant shifting of the zones. Make sure you change the values in all 3 scripts.

Note that if you don't have an OS on the volume, you should use the DataDisk scripts instead.

With that much trashing I don't think it's the gaps that are causing all the data movement.... I agree with the tip from Darlis: if this is not a Windows system disk then it is better to use the DataDisk scripts.

it is a system disk unfortunately,
Alienware M17x running a Raid Array, of a pair of 500 gig disks.

I'm not Seeing a lot of shifting mind you,  this was more a theoretical discussion.

The problem has been brought to my attention before, and there already has been some discussion about it here on the forum. You are right, the current formula causes unnecessary data movement. In the next release the scripts will create caps using a different formula. Does that answer your question?
