Problem of a friend (Remote)

He tries to save a big graphic project as PSD and on HDD PhotoShop says "Could not save the file bianca04.psd because of a disk error."
He tired to save it on an USB-Stick. Same problem. What can cause such werid problems? It is the second time, that he must create this project.
A few hours ago, the file got corrupted on the HDD and was not readable. Some data could be reconstructed using File Salvage (freeware) but
some parts of some layers are missing or destroyed.

I can not investigate because he is 650 km (404 miles) far away.

If some data got corrupted on the disk, he should check it with HDTune and the memory (Memtest86+), too.

Since the file got corrupted, there could be something wrong with it and it is only revealed when you try to save it. Could he create a new (similar) project and try to save this one? Can he save the project in a different format?

Well, if it is indeed a hard drive problem, then Spinrite may help (not free). Also, I would suggest checking his RAM with Memtest86+ to see there is a problem with RAM.

Thanks for your replies. TeamViewer can not be used when running Memtest . And a MEMtest is useless. I prefer Prime95, it was a tip from someone else. It will stress Chipset, RAM and CPU till it cooks. Sinse it is an INTEL system, it won't harm the system. It Prime95 runs 2 hours and there is no freeze or display glitches or other glitches, Photoshop is the problem.

I wonder why so much people are clearing their bank account for this crappy, inefficient piece of fucking software! My firend is really acid and mad! Meanwhile he is calling the service center. Hope it is open at this time of day and on a sunday...

HDTune is still running... He put a big fan on the open case because in germany we currently have ~25°C and the sun was cooking the roofs so he has 30°C in his loft.

Memtest is not useless. It is specially designed for revealing bad RAM. Tools like Prime95 can then test the CPU, RAM and everything in between. If he has an old Intel quad core like Q6xxx or Q9xxx, he should better use other tools like IntelBurnTest or LinX, since Prme95 can produce errors on these processors, even if there are none.

Is it a FAT disk? Maximum filesize on FAT disks is 4 gigabyte.

It is a Pentium 4 . The file is arund 200 MB, not over 4 GB. XP SP2 is installed on NTFS.

Can it be out of RAM issue? Photoshop can use a lot of RAM when rendering or saving stuff.

Memtest has run and there is no error in the RAM O_O. Perhaps another bug in PS, as expected. Adobe is holy crap!
