I have several 3 hard drives with each drive partitioned into 2 or 3 partitions each.  On these partitions I have several folders that RARELY if ever change.  I have made a batch file that (is supposed to) moves the files/folders to the end of the partitions.  I am wanting to use jk to move the files to the end of the partition, mark those files as excluded in (gasp) PerfectDisk and have the free space be in the middle.

On one partition, jk seems to work correctly.  On one partition there is the regular files, jk'd file, several gigs of blank space and the rest of the jk'd files.  The last partition has jk'd files all over the drive.  There is pleanty of free space for file shuffling to happen.  And since the jk'd files are all over the drive, I cannot move the regular files out of the way to see if that is the issue (meaning jk isn't moving regular files out of the way)

On two other drives each time I run jk, files are moved, despite anything changing in the affected files.

What am I doing wrong?

Code:
D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 C:\Dell-XPSP2_PER_ENG

D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 D:\AutoPatcher D:\Emulate "D:\iTunes Music" D:\TOSEC

D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 E:\Emulate\Roms\Fruit E:\Emulate\Roms\Good E:\Emulate\Roms\Pinball E:\Mame\chds E:\Mame\chds_

D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 F:\Dell-XPSP2_PER_ENG "F:\Donny's Music" F:\KenBackups "F:\TOSEC CD" F:\USAPhotoMaps F:\Dell-XPSP1_PER_ENG.iso F:\KenBackupFull2006-09-17.tib F:\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 R:\Keep R:\ReflexiveInstalls R:\WINXPPROITT.iso

please no comments on my partition strategy.  I have them the way I want them     Also, the reason that I don't move all the seldom changed files to one drive is that they belong on the partition their on (according to my grouping of files/partitions).  I also know that I could combine the commands into one, but being separate per partitions makes it more straight-forward for me.

Sorry for the long post

Well, I have looked but I don't see anything wrong with your command lines. It's a little bit better to use a wildcard in your items, but JkDefrag will automatically add "\*" if you don't, so that should be allright. I can only suggest that you use a "-d" option and inspect the logfile to see what exactly is happening and why JkDefrag is not moving a particular set of files.

Yes, thank you, but the end of the logfile does not tell me anything about your problem. Try to find a particular file that was not moved and look it up in the logfile. See the "See Also" chapter on the JkDefrag homepage for links to DiskView and HDview, two utilities that can be used to find out the names of files that are "all over the drive".

ok, trying new approach, freed up about 10 gigs.... tried again, still same results, ran perfect disk so there were free spots between jk'd files re-ran jk, moved nothing....  ran:

Code:
jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 5 D:\

no progress % when running -a 5, fine with me, just checking if that was by design or not

also re-sizing the window of the gui while defragging will land you a blank box  Sad

ran Hdview, confirmed space was empty

rerunning with:

D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 D:\TOSEC\* D:\Emulate\* "D:\iTunes Music\*" D:\AutoPatcher\*

MUCH better, but still gaps

Yes, the progress counter is not visible in the "-a 5" mode.

The window can only be redrawn between files. If the Microsoft defragmentation API is busy with a big file then JkDefrag has to wait until it is finished.

Well, I'm sure JkDefrag has done it's best. If there are still gaps then they must be caused by unmovable files. Or by files not included in whatever you have specified.

I feel bad.  I forgot to start this thread with:  I have tried at least a dozen defragmentation programs, freeware and commercial.  With the commandline ability and options to move certain files/folders to the end of the disk is EXACTLY what I have been looking for; easy, batchable control over the placement.  I can tell a lot of hard work has been spent on jkdefrag's development and I really appreciate it.  I only hope that I can understand what I am doing and if there is a way to make my defragmenting "just right".  I am not trying to complain.

ok, time to get serious....  14 gigs free...

checking to make sure NOTHING has ANY files open on the partition:

Code:
C:\>handle D:\

Handle v3.2
Copyright (C) 1997-2006 Mark Russinovich
Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

No matching handles found.

ok, clean...

now the following command 4 times (each time more files are moved, and the image appears to get more filled in each run):

Code:
C:\>D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 D:\TOSEC\* D:\Emulate\* "D:\iTunes Music\*" D:\AutoPatcher\*

now, one more run with logging enabled:

Code:
C:\>D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "log.log" -d 6 -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 D:\TOSEC\* D:\Emulate\* "D:\iTunes Music\*" D:\AutoPatcher\*

ok, run Hdview and do an Export of the data...  load the data file into text viewer, and analyze carefully:

didn't have to go far, the last four items in the log:

Code:

We are still in the \TOSEC directory.  There are a lot more files out of place, but let's switch over to jk's log and look for anomolies:

Code:
05:22:53 - Biggest gap: 1386131 clusters (46.02% of free clusters)
05:22:53 These items could not be moved:
05:22:53   Fragments       Bytes  Clusters Name
05:22:53   --------- ----------- --------- -----
05:22:53           0           0         0 Total
05:22:53 These items are still fragmented:
05:22:53   Fragments       Bytes  Clusters Name
05:22:53           2  3997849489    976038 D:\TOSEC\Tandy Radio Shack\Books.rar
05:22:53           2  2882060259    703628 D:\TOSEC\Atari\ST\Compilations\Games\[ST].rar
05:22:53   --------- ----------- --------- -----
05:22:53           4  6879909748   1679666 Total

fragmented files with gaps big enough for them, but maybe the gap was towards the front of the drive?

other sections do not have fragmented or unmovable files.

ok looking at the big free space gap between the regular files and the "moved to the back files", the last file is ...Books.rar and it has a LARGE blank space after it (towards the end of the disk):

05:18:52 D:\TOSEC\Tandy Radio Shack\Books.rar
  976038 clusters at 24854887, 3997849489 bytes

oddly, that happens to be one of the still fragmented files

how big is that gap?

Code:
05:35:42 Gap found: LCN=8250470, Size=926577

according to what I can understand, that is 3,795,259,392 bytes or over 3 gigs?  that's a big gap... however, Books.rar is just shy of 4 gigs.  So, is the problem?  jk doesn't "shift" the file over because the gap is too small for the whole file?  Would it be possible to handle situations like that, even if a file had to be fragmented (on LARGE files)?

back to normal files being stuck at the end:

trying perfectdisk...  oddly, perfectdisk didn't move them either... I wonder why they are "stuck"... hey jk might be just the ticket:

Code:
C:\>D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "log.log" -d 6 -u "DisableDefaults" -a 3 D:\ -e D:\TOSEC\* -e D:\Emulate\* -e "D:\iTunes Music\*" -e D:\AutoPatcher\*

nope, still "stuck" let's try one step up:

Code:
C:\>D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "log.log" -d 6 -u "DisableDefaults" -a 5 D:\ -e D:\TOSEC\* -e D:\Emulate\* -e "D:\iTunes Music\*" -e D:\AutoPatcher\*

NOPE!!!!  ok, enough of this BS, moving files off of partition, then moving them back....  FINALLY, they're out of there (until the drive fills up)

Thanks for your patience and help.

now the following command 4 times (each time more files are moved, and the image appears to get more filled in each run):

Code:
C:\>D:\Good\JkDefrag\jkdefrag -l "" -u "DisableDefaults" -a 6 D:\TOSEC\* D:\Emulate\* "D:\iTunes Music\*" D:\AutoPatcher\*

There could be files in the way.  Have you tried:
jkdefag  ... -a 3 -e D:\TOSEC\* -e ... D:
jkdefrag ... -a 6 D:\TOSEC\* ....

I ran those commands in an attempt to get files out of the end of disk region and they stubbornly stayed until I actually moved them to another partition and then back....

I feel very stupid today, I still do not understand what you are trying to do. You write that you want to "get files out of the end of disk region", but you are using the "-a 6" option? That option will move files to the end of the disk, not away from the end of the disk.

Perhaps a general remark, I don't know if this explains your problem: the "-a 6" option will move the selected files to the first gap on disk above the file, that is big enough to hold the file. The program scans for gaps starting at the end of the disk down to the end of the file. If it does not find a gap then the file is not moved. Please note that this algorithm does not perfectly fill all gaps at the end of the disk. The algorithm is simple on purpose, I see no use on wasting a lot of time on those files.

I didn't/don't understand why files in the way aren't moved out.  But if that is by design, no problem.

Also I had files that were at the end of the disk that refused to move by ANY defragmenter towards the front of the disk.  So what I did was, to actually MOVE the files off the partition, then moving them back on.

I guess that could be my new defragment method, move everything off, move it back.

What I was trying to accomplish, was to move files that would almost never change to the end of the disk by themselves, leaving possibly changing files at the front.  Having a mix of them at the end of the disk defeats the attempt.

If I understand correctly, in order to move files to the end of the disk, I first need to move ALL files out of the area that needs to be occupied, before optimization.

Please run JkDefrag with the "-d 6" commandline option and then look for one of the files that were not moved. There must be a message in the logfile that tells you why the file was not moved.

Take a look at the "-u" commandline option. JkDefrag will do it all for you in a single run.

Yes. Files already there are not moved away automatically.
