Is there any reason to run this neat little utility if I'm already using the Daily and Monthly Optimizations from MyDefrag? I guess I'm wondering if MyDefrag will do the same for me as PageDefrag would ?

MyDefrag can't defrag some of the files that PageDefrag can on a running system, so I think it's useful even if you use MyDefrag.

PageDefrag is still useful, but only works on Windows 2000 and XP, not on Vista and Win7. MyDefrag cannot defragment the pagefile, except in special circumstances such as when you boot from cdrom. For more information see How do I defragment "C:\pagefile.sys" (the swapfile)?

And what about the boot time module of UltraDefrag? Can it be considered the equivalent of PageDefrag for Windows Vista and Windows 7?

Even in BootTime, the pagefile is unmovable. "BootTime" defrag is not realy a boot time defrag. It only means a defrag wich will be done before running the services and starting the shell explorer.exe. Correct me if I'm wrong.

From the UltraDefrag website: "It provides an ability to defragment any system files. Including page file, registry hives, hiberfil.sys file, another files locked by system or applications. Native UltraDefrag runs before any file locking, therefore it can process them as an ordinary files."
So, according to their words, it should do it...

Yes, both Ultra Defrag and PageDefrag run in special pre-boot environment, so they can defragment all system files and metadata. Windows's own Chkdsk runs in the same environment; that's why it can repair file system on a boot partition.

Being that I run Win 7, I guess PageDefrag is out, but there is a lot of good answers here. Thanks people. I don't suppose anyone would like to make a recommendation as to what I should use for a Boot-time de-frag, or is it really necessary?

If you follow the instructions on the page I mentioned before then the pagefile will be defragmented, and will never get fragmented. So there is no need for a boot-time defrag. Also, don't worry too much about perfect defragmentation and optimization. Accept a few fragmented files, getting them defragmented is not worth the trouble.

I can only speak from is Win7 64bit.

If you want to move or remove the "pagefile.sys" then click on "Start/Control Panel/System" then "Advanced System Settings" in left panel.  If UAC request a password enter it and click OK, "System Options" opens to the "Advanced" tab now click in "Performance" radio button "Settings" then "Advanced" tab then "Virtual Memory" RB "Change" I unchecked the "Automatically manage paging file for all drives" select custom size and enter 5838 in both Minimum and Maximum size for the paging file and click RB "Set" then click OK.  IF you set it to NO PAGE file and reboot then run MyDefrag it will defrag your system file without a PageFile.  Then reset the above procedure to the same for both Min and Max your page file is beyond your system and other files on the C: drive.  It just will not show me how to do the 'hiberfil.sys' file so I followed 'Bloody Sword's' instructions and did the Cmd Prompt as Admin and turned it off.  As I do not use my system on batteries only.

Just a little note: The pagefile will usually fragment after a BSOD+memory dump. From what I know, the memory dump moves memory contents into the pagefile, at next reboot the rest of the file will be stripped away and the MEMORY.DMP file remains. Then a new pagefile will be created.

Thanks for the info, I was not aware of that.

Personally I've turned off the dump-option since as an ordinary user (ie. I'm not a kernel/driver-dev) I don't need the dump-files anyway.
To disable the dump-file on Win7:
Control panel - System and Security - System - Advanced System Settings - Startup and Recovery - Settings... - Write debugging information - (none)
