Hi Jeroen, I really like jkdefrag however I find the colour scheme to be a little lacking in contrast. If I may be so bold as to suggest the following alterations to the colour scheme of the GUI I think it would improve the visual look and help with the identification of different features in the display. The majority of the changes are to increase the contrast between the different types of file marking. I include a screen shot of the current colour scheme for comparison.

Current:

Suggestion:

The colours suggested are as follows:

Empty (#000000)
In use (#2D4880)
Defragmented (#8FA3CC)
Fragmented (#FFFF00)
Unmovable (#CC5C5C)
System files (#5CCC63)
Busy (#FFFFFF)

In addition the mock up image includes a narrow darker grey border surrounding the main display to help define the data region from the window and text regions:

Thanks again for developing this the great program, I hope my suggestions are useful.

Nice suggestion Smiley

though I like more red and green, they are typical colors in defragmenting software...

Typoteus: Thanks Smiley I did try a green-red based one but it looked too harsh. In addition, red is normally understood as a colour signifying a warning or problem - in the case of defragmenting a harddisk it might cause undue worry in people if they see a lot of red appear. The greatest argument against a red-green scheme however is the relatively common medical condition of red-green colour blindness, such a scheme would cause sufferers a great deal of irritation I suspect.

I've made a slight modification, the defragmented blue was too intense once the screen is full of it so I've toned it down a bit.

Updated:

Empty (#000000)

Defragmented (#8B9EC6)
Fragmented (#FFFF00)

Its a very subtle change but it does make a big difference when a lot of the drive is defragmented (unlike the example image).

Thank you very much for your alternate color scheme, I really appreciate it! I can see that you have put a lot of thought into it and I like your colorscheme a lot. But changing the colors is big, even though the changes in the sources are very small. I think it will confuse users. So I am saving the color change for version 4. It will help make it clear that it's a totally new and revamped version of JkDefrag.

hy,

will there be an option to change the colors in the settings?

i am used to

free (white)
system files (black)
unmovable files (black)
MFT (black)
fragmented (red)
compressed defragmented (dark blue)
uncompressed defragmented (bright blue)
busy (yellow)
folders (orange)
unknown filetypes before analyzing (dark green)

maybe each user has his own fafourite colors and may use them.
for default the colors of CnlPepper may work fine.
when changing the colors the change should stay at the next startup of the program.

strange things happen. after month of reading this forum i need to register to make sure, that i may change the colors as i want in v4.x.

Yes, I am planning to make it possible to set your own colors in the scripting language of version 4.

Skinning usually refers to different buttons and a changeable layout of the items on the screen. But JkDefrag has no buttons and stuff, only the diskmap and the information texts at the top of the screen. I don't quite see how I can "skin" that.
