Have you tried to run the defragger with a debug option, for example "-d 5"? What are the last lines in the logfile? Another user has reported a similar problem, and in his case the program crashed when it started analysing a particular directory. I'm waiting to hear from him what that directory contains. Perhaps the program crashes on some weird filename, or an impossible filedate, or something like that?

The last file in your log was correctly processed, so the program has crashed on the NEXT file, which is not listed in your log. Can you take a look on your disk and tell me what the next file is? The defragger processes files alfabetically, so it should be very easy to find the name of the next file.

The name of the last file in your log has a length of 258 characters. Many Windows program use a maximum filename length of 259 characters (the full path to the file, including disk and folders), a number specified by Microsoft. If the name of the next file is longer than 259 characters then that is probably the cause of the crash. It's actually not the defragger that is causing the crash, but a Microsoft system call!!! There is another system call I can use, which perhaps will not crash, but before I change the defragger I'd like to know if this is indeed the problem.

ur right the next file will be
Code:

C:\Documents and Settings\Arno Nym.PENTICRACK\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\{D7B71E3E-43B5-11CF-C550-572303C2CB35}_2878_3\rashaderbmhasenvmapusehemimaphasshadowhascolormapglosshasdot3alphatesthasshadowocclusion.cfx

and is 4 chars longer... hm what now?
sure it is a cachefolder, but crashes not every time on this position. maybe i have a lot of too long filenames but cant delete all...

I'm glad we've found the problem: long filenames. After a bit of experimenting I've managed to reproduce the problem. That was a bit of a puzzle, because all the programs I tried refused to create filenames longer than 259 characters. I finally managed by making a file with a name of 200 characters in a directory with a short filename, and then renaming the directory to a name with 200 characters.

Anyway, I've found the problem, and I've found the solution as well. I've build the solution into version 3.0 of the defragger, which I hope to release in a couple of days.

Please note that _MAX_PATH is per path component, and Win32 itself (as well as NT) allows paths 32K-1 UCS-2 chars (i.e. 32767 chars, 65534 bytes).
