Author Topic: Can't defrag all files: lots of yellow left  (Read 6059 times)

I've tried using the monthly script several times but keep getting left with lots of yellow (fragmented files).

Running myDefrag after a reboot didn't help. Running in safe mode is way too slow to try. Also the fragmented files are ISO files of videos and not system or program files.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Solution: The "Monthly" script is set to ignore certain files. I edited the script and removed the lines to ignore ISO files. As far as performance is concerned, the ISO files aren't accessed frequently and a fragmented file wouldn't seem to slow down the computer but defragmenting the ISO files would make the process take longer and possibly make it harder to defrag more important files.

My conclusion is to leave the script set to ignore these large, infrequently used files, knowing the program is working correctly.

Hmm, and what do you think will be the gain for you and your disk,  if you defragment those ISOs ?
Nice looking disk map does not count.

Words like complete and optimal are usually excluding each other.

I thought the idea was that at the end, after using MyDefrag, there should be no yellow.

Did I misread the other posts about this?

No, I did not.
My idea was aimed against misusing of Monthly Optimize, running it several times.

OK. Without philosophical considerations of monthly defragmentation, the benefits or lack thereof, is there a solution to my question? Can anyone come up with help?

How do I run the monthly script to eliminate yellow (fragmented files) from the final result? Also tired running Perfect Disk before MyDefrag and that didn't change anything.

did you try other methods, like Defragment()  ?
( implicitly without fast option and preserving wrapped files )

Edit:Did the log list the files as they cannot be moved ?
did you check access rights to those files ? ( theoretically admin or even NT Authority/system account can have access denied )

supposing free space, or largest free gap is larger that those files.
I do not know how MO script or Sorting actions behave in opposite case.
I have never used sorting of huge files.

MO script does not ignore files, it just leaves them for the last zone.
I suggest you to modify last zone in MO not to sort, using just degrag and fastfill.

Yes, that's how it's supposed to be. But there are things that can prevent a perfect result, for more information see Why does MyDefrag not perfectly optimize my disk?. Also see the I have a problem! page, I don't think there is a bug but only with a debug logfile can I can explain exactly what is happening.

What happens, if there is a file, that cannot be moved ( e.g. locked ),
but during wrapping the big file around it the locked file disappears, or is moved ?

Will be such a big file, wrapped around an empty gap, marked yellow as fragmented ?

MyDefrag does not know that the unmovable file has disappeared. So the big file will not be marked in yellow.

I read the help links. Can't get my disk defragged any better after several attempts and running all the other scripts before the monthly. Since the fragmented files, listed as yellow, aren't system files, I don't think running in safe-mode would make a difference.

I'd like to generate a debug file. What level should I set for debug?

Usually the "Debug(175)" setting will generate enough detail.

The debug file is over 850 megs. I can't even load it in Wordpad or MS Word to look at it.

Any part of it that I should post rather than uploading the entire file?

Do not post the complete file, but only the first and last few hundred lines, enough to demonstrate the problem.
