Hello out there,

What do you think if MyDefrag monitors the HDD temperature while processing and uses the SlowDown() or even a pause
if the drive gets hotter and hotter? There could be settings for the reaction curve.

Especially Laptop-Users are affectet of hot HDDs and this would be a very nice feature.
Today, the temperature can be read using the S.M.A.R.T. technique of the HDDs.
The only problem: The binary format for the temperature might vary from Vendor to Vendor.
But I think there are only few value formats:

- Floating values with varying bit precisions
- Integer where the comma is moved from left to right.

What do you think of this idea?

Thanks for sharing your idea, I appreciate it. Temperature monitoring is already on my wishlist, and it would be a useful feature. However, it is rather difficult to implement. And temperatures vary from disk to disk, some disks are manufactured to run hotter than others. And I always use disks in a RAID mirror configuration and in that case SMART simply does not work (the raid controller exposes a virtual disk to Windows that has no SMART).

HDTune will do this. It will (among other things) monitor the drive's temperature, and will display the temperature in the system tray. Unfortunately, it does not display the temps for removable disks like USB drives.

Nice Smiley. That would be cool for X-Mas, this year. xD

Yes, unfortunally it is not possible to acces SMART through the USB protocol. It would be a nice feature if MS and the Vendors of thoose HDD-Cases would think about it. I don't have a PC, wich can handle drives bigger than 127 GB and therefore I can't see the SMART values of my external USB HDD, even if I dissassamble the case Sad.

Hi Jeroen,

You are correct .. very difficult to implement harddisk temperature
Every manufacturer has it's own way ..
