Hi,

I have a new idea.

I thought of an simple wizard, wich will ask the user wich kind of partition does hold personal files or the system files...
With a few questions the wizard could create scripts for optimizing these partitions or drives. These scripts can be optimized
within the content of the partition or drive.

What do you think about it?

You are speaking about optimized scripts for storage drives and system drives, are you? I also thought of that, and tried to build special scripts for my main HDD and my storage HDD. I would publish them but I don't think anyone but me might find them useful, because they are written especially for my needs.

I think that would be a good idea, since for any storage drive the boot optimization wouldn't even need to be tried, and sorting doesn't makle much sense usually (except maybe for bunches of small files, like photos).

Maybe it would be nice to have a submenu that lets you choose which zones to create, and which files should be put there, but the scripting language is pretty easy so I don't think there's much need for that.

Maybe some advanced selection options would be more usefule (ChangedSince([NUMBER OF DAYS]) for example, would be useful)

Mhh. But I think this will make MyDefrag interesting even for users that aren't so advanced like us.

For example: My Girlfriend is frustrating of long boot times and slow program starts on her vista laptop.
The defragmentation of Vista is dumb, she said. She can't see what is happening there and how optimized
it is. And even after Vista defrag, the HDD is even slow than before the Vista defrag. So now, she saw
MyDefrag on my laptop and I think she would be pleased if she could optimize her HDD on her own by an
easy to use GUI for MyDefrag. She can answer a few questions and the paritions are scanned. Then
MyDefrag will do it's best and will optimize the partitions fast and well. Smiley

PS: She said that the scripts are too cryptographic for standard users. So an assistant to create your
own optimization scripts would be a big benefit for those users who are interested in optimizing their HDDs,
but they doesn't have knowledge about scripting.

Thanks for sharing your idea, I appreciate it. Please feel free to build such a wizard, I will be happy to put a link to it in the "See Also" page. Message to your girlfriend: the default MyDefrag scripts are perfectly fine for all disks, and you do not have to look into scripting to be able to use MyDefrag.

Unfortunally I can only make such assistant using .NET. Therefore on the system where it will be executed,
the actual .NET framework must be installed. And sometimes this can not be done. Windows 2000 does not
support actual .NET versions and the installer refuses to install them Sad. And for XP it's a very big packhage.
Vista and Windows 7 have this framework on-board.

Okay I will make three shortcuts on her desktop Smiley.

Why not make a scheduled task that runs if the system is idle for x amount of time and that runs MyDefrag with a lower priority?
It usually finishes in a couple of minutes, why would you need a comprehensive script that makes decisions on what to do when?
The systems performance is better of by running MyDefrag more frequent then the other way round.

Or maybe just let her use the Mydefrag script chooser. It will remember the disks that are chosen per script, and is a bit more flexible than three shortcuts. And if you want to show her only the three optimize scripts then simply delete the other scripts from the Scripts folder.

Oh thanks for the Tip. Didn't know that the scriptlist is dynamic. Smiley
