Would it be possible to continue development, or has someone already started a fork?

I'd like to be a part of a general defrag open source GPL sort of project.

Anybody got any references to that sort of thing?

Is it possible to start a project based on JkDefrag 3.9?  Has someone done this already?

I understand the source code [for 4.0/4.1] is available for purchase.  In simple English, how usable is it to a free GPL project?

Thanks,

j

-btw, you are an inspiration... i want to hack the api now... whoopie:)

The latest JkDefrag version is v3.36. As far as I know nobody has started a fork, and the version has been released more than a year ago. The first release was in December 2006. There have been some contributions from programmers, but precious little, and this is one of the reasons why v4 is no longer GPL. My guess is that development, such as there is, is done by commercial companies, and they are not inclined to share their code. Feel free to start a fork, but v4 is vastly superior, and freeware, so I don't think many people are waiting for a new v3 version. I fear that the only people you will be pleasing is commercial companies that want to integrate a defragger in a commercial product.

The sources for v4 are available for a fee, but it is a hefty fee, and when purchased cannot be used for a GPL project. Also, v4 is a complete rewrite, not a vamped-up v3.

p.s. Perhaps a tip: put your energies into building a nice GUI for MyDefrag.

Unless Jeroen has changed his mind, it should be possible to license the source, read comments here and here.

Thank you very much for your interest. Yes, it is possible to license the source code, and there is also a plug-in DLL available. You can contact me by sending me a personal message here on the forum.
