I have again and again times the problem to defragmentieren that jkdefrag in a continuous loop it hangs and tried again and again the same file unsuccessfully. Also I had the case with alternating unsuccessful Defragmentieren of 2 files already. Of it no log however unfortunately exists.

I'm sorry for answering so late, but I'm currently on holiday in Sri Lanka. You have removed the logfile? I cannot download.

Sorry for answering so late! I am still on holiday....
I have looked at your logfile, but I do not know what is happening. After the message "Alternative method failed, leaving file where it is" the program should mark the file as unmovable and not try to move that file again. But in your case it does... It should not be possible. It looks like your loop is caused by a bug in JkDefrag, and I have looked in the code, but I do not see it right now.

Worrm strikes again

I too have encounterd this "worm" problem. Being a software developer myself, I can see how this kind of bug can creep into your algorythim which is attempting to defragment the files.
Here are the specifics which I observed
*) ONLY happens when -a4 is used (full defrag)
*) CPU is slammed at 100% while "worm" is creeping (not normal when running JKdefrag)
*) The "worm" gains size as it encounters other files. After several hours of observation, I watched my "worm" grow from about 2 pixels long to over an inch long... it just kept on going.
I was able to get the "worm" by 1st moving a large chunk of files to the end of the drive. This left a large (several GB) empty space in the middle of the drive. Then, when I tried to do a full defrag and the large empty space was encounterd, the "worm" emerged and started creaping upwards in the large empty space.
Apparently, the algorythim "forgets" that it is trying to free up space and is instead concentrating on moving files upwards over and over and over.
There must have been over 500 MB of free space below the worm after several hours of creeping... but the defragger never started to fill it in. Instead, the files appeared to be moving from the bottom of the worm to the top of the worm ignoring how much space had been freed up below it.
To get past the "worm" problem, I 1st did a -a3 (quick defrag) which grabbed files from above the worm and filled in the space below it. Then, after the "worm" was consumed by the quick defrag, I stopped it and restsated the -a4 (full defrag). Now, the processing finished as expected.
I hope this descripion helps you fix the "worm glitch" in the full defrag algorythim.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it! It's a weird problem and I still don't quite understand how it can be happening, but I'm back from holiday now and can now look at it in detail. But first some other stuff that has been piling up while I was away...

I have just released a new version of JkDefrag. It contains a fix for the "worm" problem, but I think your problem is caused by something else. Could you give the new version a try and let me know? I think your problem is not fixed and will still occur, but maybe we're lucky.

I have tried V3.8 and the "worm" did not appear. However, I am not sure if the file-layout on my disk would have caused a worm.
I guess time witll tell if this issue is resolved.

I began to use JkDefrag about amonth ago and am not that well known with terms as infinite worm, so maybe my remark is misplaced. I had no issues with JkDefrag64 3.7 and only ran into issues with 3.8. I run the program by use of the command
Code:
JkDefrag64.exe -q -a 4 -d 0 -l "" C: D: E:
This causes issues with ISO files of over 4GB that I have on the D drive. JkDefrag does not allow it to stop and uses a full core (50%) of my Core2Duo, but no disc access by the program anymore. This is while moving sectors for 1 of the ISO files, but it does not continue anymore. The window responds "normally" and can be closed, but remains active in Task Manager and can not be stopped from there.
I work around this by use of the following command:
Code:
JkDefrag64.exe -q -a 4 -d 0 -l "" C: D: E: -e "*.iso"

Your problem is not the "infinite worm" problem. I think the program was simply busy, huge files like that take a long time. Did you look at the JkDefrag logfile? Run the program with one of the debug options to get more info. Try rebooting your computer, maybe that helps. Do you have a real-time virusscanner? Try again with the virusscanner turned off.

I reproduced and it hangs with almost no disk activity and after 2 hours of continous usage of 100% of 1 core of my 2 cores I found it enough.
Process started with:
D:\Quicksilver\Applicaties\JkDefrag64.exe -q -a 4 -d 6 -l "C:\jk.log" "C:\X\Y.iso"
The log states (I changed some in the naming):

This very last line log shows that JkDefrag has instructed the Windows defragmentation API to move the 4.6 gigabyte file from one place on disk to another. JkDefrag then sits back and waits until Windows is finished with it. The CPU is not used by JkDefrag, but by Windows. I have to ask again: do you have a virus scanner? Turn it off! If not then investigate your system for other software that has to do with the harddisk.

I did turn my virus scanner off and as I stated 3.7 did work properly (even with my Virus scanner on). I have downloaded 3.7 again to see if I was mistaken and it also does not work. I will let you know the outcome.

With virus scanner enabled, JkDefrag 3.7 finished the drive on which the ISO was present within 10 minutes.
