One thing I did notice is after running JKD the 'Finished' window is blank (same as if you just run JKD.exe), with Ewieldra's GUI the display stays in the window allowing you to see the result of the defrag. Just a subtle change that would improve it I think.

Well, I don't have a idea how i could change that, because my program does nothing else than generate the command line (exactly the text you will get when you press "Copy to Clipboard") and call the Windows API CreateProcess with this text.

EDIT: I did some testing on this, but i really can't reproduce it. Perhaps there are other programs on your system that cause JkDefrag to repaint (JkDefrag won't do this when finished).

Possibly have the GUI window close after clicking run would be a possible improvement also.

I never thought of that, but it's a good suggestion. I'll add it in the next version.

EDIT: I released some new versions since that request and added an new option: "Wait for Exit", which causes JkDefragStarter to wait for the process it created and so stays open. If you disable this option, it will save all settings and exit as soon as you press "Run JkDefrag!".

Not as far as I know. I just know running Ewieldras gui the disc display stays on screen to view, running yours it goes blank. Having thought about it Ewieldra's gui stays open whilst JKD is running so maybe it is his GUI itself doing this. If that is the case then don't worry about it, I'd rather be able to close the gui once JKD is running than be able to see the result once finished.

My first impression of your gui was that it looked pretty good, having used it for a while I can now say it IS very good, good job Smiley

I changed some values in the process startup information of the CreateProcess call. This might have changed the behavior of JkDefrag, but I'm not sure at all. All I can say is that it does not go blank on my Windows XP and on my BartPE-Disk using the newest Version 1.12.2.

This ability was also built into the new version. Just make sure that the check box "Wait for Exit" is deactivated.

The new version also fixes a bug that made the program crash when a empty SpaceHogs- or exclude mask was specified and a second bug that added the excludes also to the SpaceHogs (what did not change the behavior of JkDefrag, but created confusing command lines).

This is a flaw in the way JkDefrag draws the disk map. If you minimize the window, the disk map becomes blank and stops drawing itself, and when you bring the window back up, it won't redraw the disk map until it finishes moving the current file. Of course, if it's finished, it won't have any file to move, and therefore the disk map will be blank.

A New Version of my GUI:
JkDefragTWGUI V0981b:

Changes since 96b:

* new: Option - "Don't start on battery power"
* new: Position of the JkDefrag-window is now saved, too (experimental)
* changed: renamed some parameters in the GUI.ini
* changed: reduced memory usage up to ~7MB
* changed: time to test of a running JkDefrag after stop increased to 4 min.
* fixed: removed double -f 0 from the commandline
* fixed: drive selection now returns e.g "c:\" instead of "c:\\*"
* fixed: "Export to BAT ..." and "Copy Command to clipboard"
* fixed: if the program tries to close a running JkDefrag* process the message "JkDefrag closed" now only logged if the process is really closed

I'm not minimising it though (I know about that issue), I'm leaving it till it finishes and as soon as it finishes it goes blank (it does this if I just analyse too which kind of defeats the point of running the analyse alone as you can't see the result).
Not a major issue, but a slight irritation :?

I think I have identified your problem now! But it's not a bug in my GUI, as far as I can see.

To reproduce: Do not specify any items to defragment at all -> JkDefrag will defragment all of your partitions and go blank when finished.
If you specify one or more items (e.g. "C:\Windows D:"), JkDefrag will process all of them and show the result of the last one (in the example "D:").

You're right. Not specifying any items to defrag gives a blank results screen, selecting two or more items to defrag leaves the results on screen when finished.

I agree I don't think its a bug in your gui (jkdefrag.exe gives the same blank screen), hopefully Jeroen will see this and provide some feedback

(On a side note I wonder why Ewieldra's GUI doesn't display this issue though)

Yes, if you specify disks explicitly the program will leave the last diskmap on the screen. In automatic mode then after the last disk it clears the screen and shows a Finished message. Chances are that the last disk in the system is a cdrom, and then the last screen would be an empty diskmap with an "ignoring disk because it is a removable disk" warning. I thought that would be very confusing to users, so I added a final clear screen with "Finished".

Ahhh, I see. So to solve it I simply add my main drive to the items to be defragged instead of leaving it blank (just tried it and it works). I see now also why Ewieldras GUI didn't give the blank screen, it seems to select the main drive automatically (has a dropdown menu with the main drive selected anyway).

Thanks for the explanation, and resulting solution Jeroen, very much appreciated. And apologies to cf for suggesting it was a bug in your excellent GUI, I'm very happy with it now Cheesy

Hello all,

here's a new version of my GUI (V1.0)

V1.0 2007/06/20

    * new: Automatic language selection
      I'm searching for translators! Smiley
    * new: Size of the JkDefrag-window is now saved, too.
    * new: Include/exclude-file selection now with different modes - e.g. you select a file like "d:\foo\bar\test.avi"
      "---" result: "d:\foo\bar\test.avi"
      "Mode 1" result: "d:\foo\bar\*.avi"
      "Mode 2" result: "*.avi"
    * changed: "Paste" and "Insert New" now inserting the data on the next line from the current cursor position, instead before.
    * fixed: removed the trailing "," if you cancel the selection for include/exclude files/directories.
    * fixed: changed the check of the battery status (I hope it works, because I can't test it with a desktop PC)
    * fixed: removed double -f 0 from the commandline
    * fixed: drive selection now returns e.g "c:\" instead of "c:\\*"

I just released a new version (1.13) of JkDefragStarter.

Most important change:
I made the input format of the edit boxes for items, SpaceHogs and excludes uniform, so you have to separate multiple masks in all boxes by a semicolon ( ; ).
Please read the internal help on those boxes for more information (and examples) on the format.

I now put the source code into a separate download, since I suppose most people won't need it anyway and my traffic is limited Smiley .
