I've read through the forum and seen you are considering the possibility of some sort of file sorting, eg arranging files by date etc as part of the optimisation. Just wanted to throw a couple of ideas into the mix which I think would make for great additions to the program.

I occasionly use an old program called TuneXP which has an "Ultra fast booting" function which moves all the boot files to the start of the disk to improve startup speed. It works well and I'm guessing would be fairly simple to implement (TuneXP link)

Also theres a commercial defragger called Ultimate defrag which allows you to specify individual files or programs to move to the start of the disk to improve performance of those programs. I think this is a great idea and as far as I'm aware its the only defragger that does this (UltimateDefrag link)

Just a couple of ideas

Thanks for sharing your idea's, I appreciate it! This has been discussed before, it's a feature of the standard Windows XP defragger and uses a file generated by XP called "%windir%\Prefetch\Layout.ini".

I have put your idea on the list for a possible future "pro" version. It ties in nicely with another option that has been proposed, to move specified files to the end of the harddisk.

DiskTrix UD's feature "Optimum Directory Placement And Consolidation" (bottom of the linked page) sounds interesting and reasonable, it seems easy to port to JKD.

JkDefrag does that already. It moves all directories to the beginning of the harddisk, right next to the MFT. It's all automatic and is not an option that you have to turn on.

JKD moves directories to the beginning, but that didn't mean next to MFT, in my box the MFT is near middle of the partition, followed by MFT Zone, Pagefile(fixed size), MFT Mirror, $attr, $upcase, $.etc. The drive's been defraged by PerfectDisk's offline defrag (PDBoot) long time ago.
During the analyze phase the total directory clusters(maybe 1% more for further grown or unmovable objects inside this area), MFT/MFT Zone/MFT Metadata location are all known, then relocate dirctories near MFT(before/after with sufficient space) and add to cluster exclusions to prevent FindGap after.
IIRC, the code used to calculate exclusions considered only the ItemLcn, if a large file with fragments within MFT Zone (1st fragment not inside) may not be cleared, i didn't read your code carefully this may not happen.

That is VERY unusual. But you are right, JkDefrag does not move the directories to the MFT, but merely to the beginning of the disk.

I'm sorry, but I have not been able to decipher the rest of your posting.
