It is not my script, it's from Falcon4 Wink .
Since the script does not use SortBy file actions, you can even use this daily.
And no, do not use any other scripts (except the defragment script).
Hi can you change this script to have "SortBy"? This would be very nice.
Thank You in advance.

Wow thanks. This is what i call fast. I see you named this NewWinOptimizeMonthly. This means i use this once a month because of the "SortBy" and the NewWinOptimize every time i want. Correct? No incompatibility between the two?
And thanks again.

Yes, the SortBy (I choose SortByName in this script) moves a lot of files. This means heavy stress for your disk, just like the monthly script from Jeroen.
And yes, the normal NewWinOptimize script is of course compatible and you can run this whenever and as often as you like.

You should select even the Thumbs.db and Thumbnailcache files of XP and Vista into the directory sorting. This increases the photolisting.

Why with the directories? Wouldn't it be better if these files stayed with the pictures? I'm guess the explorer will check if the file is still there or has changed or something.
The directory path should be loaded into memory after the first access.

You can test this by measuring what is faster in the end. I think this will differ from XP and Vista.

Did you test it? I use Picasa for my (small amount of) Pictures, not the explorer.  Wink
And also Win7.

Picasa comes from google to spy you out. Do not use it. (My suggestion)

What are they trying to find on my PC?
If I had fear of being spied out, I would go to Linux. No, wait, MyDefrag would not work on Linux.  Tongue

They are spying out your wonts and affectations. They are collecting this data, anonymously but if you go to google and you search for something the ads will be perfectly arranged to your needs so that say can collect money. Do not use Google software and do not register there. Linux can be spawn as well as windows and mac. There were said, that there would be no need to defragment Linux. Linux has a better dealing with new files and on file deletion than windows but all optimizations can not fully prevend fragmenting.

But only if I do click on the ads. And I never do. I don't even pay attention to the ads on google search. And no, I'm not registered by any google services.
Edit: Now that I take a look around the search results page, I don't see any ads. I could have sworn there were some some time ago.  Huh

I know that ext prevents fragmentation more than ntfs can. ext4 seems to have a defragmentation utility now but there is no program to optimize the disk AFAIK.

I agree that there is nothing that you can do to ignore google, as it is very useful... But Picasa will collect information about what you do with this program...

Mh. Strange is, that Linux is used for server application. Defragmenting the database files is a must have to optimize server performance. The performance will decrease even on ext-fs or any other file systems. There must be a optimization tool out there for linux. I can't believe that there isn't one...

There is the copy & restore technique: Backup all the files, format the drive and restore the files again.
But thats Linux: No easy to use gui tools for the cosseted Windows user.  Tongue

Dont think that this is what administrators do. This would be too time intensive and would be very expensive.
