Hello,

I ran JkDefrag in safe mode and the entire process was successfully finished, or so I thought. I noticed some gray areas on the main window, and I knew they correspond to some kind of space that the program uses. Anyways, after I quit the program, I noticed that 10 GB of space was lost. I ran JkDefrag again, yet lost even more space. I tried deleting shadow copies and system restore files using Disk Cleaner in Vista, but nothing happened. I believe those spaces the program created were not wiped away. What is going on ? Please someone help me.

What does your "jkdefrag.log" file say? It's probably the "C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA" file. For more information about that file see the JkDefrag homepage.

Deleting that file did not solve the problem. However, I noticed in the Log file that this file "C:\System Volume Information\{908a066f-7b98-11dd-b830-a9297ace43bf}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752}" is the one responsible for occupying that 13 GB of space. I'm assuming this a restore point. Can it be deleted knowing that it will lead to recovering the 13 GB ? Because I was going to attempt a system restore to that point to see if the free space will be recovered. Thank you again

Restore points will be automatically deleted if you run low on disk space.  You can also limit the maximum system restore disk usage via control panel -> system -> system restore

I believe that when jkdefrag moves some exe files, XP creates more restore points.  The problem is that restore points also contain exe files.  So I do a 2 part defrag. move *\restore* to the end of disk, and then defrag normally with -e "*\restore*"

In your first posting you said you had deleted "shadow copies and system restore files", so I assumed that was not it. Yes, it's a restore point and yes, deleting it will recover the diskspace. Perhaps "disk cleaner" does not properly delete restore points. The normal way to do it is via the Windows control panel, for instructions see the "How do I defragment "C:\System Volume Information\...." question in the frequently asked questions chapter on the JkDefrag homepage. Also see the "Why does JkDefrag delete my restore points?" question.

I was unsuccessful is deleting the 13 GB file initially because it was the only restore point, and Vista keeps at least 1 restore point in order to delete the others. Therefore I created a new restore point and deleted the older one. From now on I will disable System Restore before fragmentation. Thank you very much for your help. Grin
