Just wanted to let you know that JKDefrag is running fine under Windows Vista. One important thing you should mention in your documentation: you need to run JKDefrag as administrator, otherwise it will not run at all. (Even if your user account is set up as an "administrator" account, programs do not run with those elevated privileges by default.) So I have my desktop shortcut to JKDefrag configured to run it as administrator.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I appreciate it! There's already a little paragraph about permissions in the "Running" chapter, the first item just below the list of options.

JkDefrag contains code to elevate it's permissions to "SeBackupPrivilege", so it can handle certain hidden system files. Perhaps Vista needs more? If you (or someone else) can give me a pointer then I'd be most grateful!

In your documentation you state that "On a default Windows system the "administrator" userid has full permissions to all files." Under Vista this is no longer always the case. Even when you are logged into an administrator account, programs don't run with full elevated privileges unless you explicitly force them to, using the "run as administrator" option. Apparently this is MS's attempt to keep rogue programs (i.e. trojans) from causing damage when started under an administrator's account.

I'd like to add a little text to the docs, but I don't have access to a Vista machine so I don't know exactly what to say. Where can people find the "run as administrator" option? How should they start the defragger?

Here is what I would add to your existing text:

Permissions
JkDefrag needs "full control" permissions to all files that it must defragment/optimize. On a default Windows system the "administrator" userid has full permissions to all files. Users can also run JkDefrag, but then it can only defragment/optimize the files to which the user has "full control".
Special note for Vista users: To run JkDefrag with full permissions, it needs to be specifically run "as administrator", even when the user is logged into an administrator account. The easiest way to do this is to create a shortcut to JkDefrag, open up its properties dialog, click on the "Advanced" button, and check the "Run as Administrator" checkbox.

Under Vista, it's not hard to manuall run JKDefrag 3.7 as an administrator and make it work...  but I am unable to make the screensaver piece work.

I can manually set the properties of \system32\JkDefragScreenSaver.exe to run as an administrator.

I cannot find a property setting for administrator for system32\JkDefragScreenSaver.scr.

Anyway, bottom line is the screensaver will not defrag, it kicks over immediately to the windows screensaver.

Anyone get it to work???  If so, how?

You are the first to report that the screensaver does not work on Vista. Perhaps somebody can verify this? Is there anyone that has a working JkDefrag screensaver on Vista? If the screensaver works for somebody on Vista, then the problem is specific to your computer, not general to Vista. I don't have access to a Vista machine myself, so I cannot check myself.

Thanks! But I asked if there is anyone that has a working JkDefrag screensaver on Vista? Or maybe somebody can help to find a setting or a trick to make it work? I do not have access to a Vista machine myself!

Hi again!

The first question on the first line was: "Perhaps somebody can verify this?" the second question was: "Is there anyone that has a working JkDefrag screensaver on Vista?"

I answared the first question.

Sorry if I made something wrong in that.
