Hi everyone.
Regarding my system disk (C:\), when I sort by name, all of my zone 2 files are placed 1% behind my zone 1 files, as it should, but my zone 3 files start about 15% above my zone 2 files.
When I run the daily default of Analyze, Defragment, Fast Optimize, the day after a sort, all the files from zone 2 are moved up, leaving about 15% of my drive empty between zone 1 and 2.
Because it does this, it takes an exceedingly long time to run the default because all the files in zone 2 need to be moved back up, which in turn requires the initial files in zone 3 to be moved as well.

Does anyone know why this might be happening? I have three internal and two external drives all 500 gigs, and this only happens on my system drive.
I have run numerous disk view programs, and all show the 15% at the beginning of my disc as empty.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks  Wink

This problem stems from Windows Setup, because the beginning of the HDD is taken over by temporary files, then Windows Setup deletes them after Windows is mostly installed, AFAIK. Thus, you have a big area of free space in the beginning!

Especially Windows 2000.

I thought it might be something like that, but I've had this install for years, and the space is showing empty in all other programs.
I have a permanently set swap, windows defrag disabled, and all my temp files and folders are on a separate drive.

It's not really a huge deal, because when zone 2 gets moved up, it stays in alphabetical order, it's just that it takes a very long time, and I'd like everything at the beginning of the drive rather than centered.
I've been running JKD daily for about 6 months, so I know it rather well. It's just annoying me is all. I thought maybe someone else has the same problem and we could work it out together.
I'll post a shot of my C:\ drive when it's completed the daily analyze/defrag/fast optimize routine....
(Rebooted about an hour ago, and zone 2's still moving back up)

leaving about 15% of my drive empty between zone 1 and 2.
JkDefrag calculates the start of the zones from the size of all the files inside a zone, plus the size of the free areas. It sounds simple, but it's tricky and there are some cases where the calculations result in wrong numbers. And when the program encounters an unmovable file it has to recalculate everything, because the unmovable file can be inside a different zone then where it's supposed to go. The system usually works very well, but "mistakes" can happen. Perhaps in your case you can avoid the problem by changing the size of the free spaces with the "-f" option, or by disabling the spacehogs with "-u DisableDefaults".

Thanks for the info.
I'll give both ideas a shot and see what happens.

That's exactly what I get with a fresh install, except the MFT is also taking up *all* the beginning too.

I've tried both option individually and in variations together and it makes no difference.
I can live with it. I just won't sort them by name anymore.
