JkDefrag v3 Forum / Questions and help / Using JkDefrag within Total Commander

Yes, it's easy that way, but the only trouble is when you want to defrag the whole disk itself. Then you cannot make %P%S to translate into say C:\. It really depends on how you use JkDefrag and if you defrag whole disks or files/folders. If you use %P%S insted of "%P" you are able to select single file(s)/dir(d) to defrag Use -q in parameters if you like to let defrag close automatisk when done

JkDefrag v3 Forum / Bugs and problems / Display problem with 3.7

Hi,
I have recently noticed that, in some cases, there is a small glitch in the display : some segments remain white after JkDefrag has finished. I thought white meant "being processed/moved". Maybe a refresh problem ?

JkDefrag v3 Forum / Questions and help / Defragging an external USB drive

Hmm you must know that Microsoft Defragmenter sometimes keeps on running even one think it has stopped. At least Diskeeper does that, and since Windows defrag is a basic version of Diskeeper...
If you reboot your PC while your external are still in the process of writing a file, this could cause damage to your filesystem. Especially if your external HDD use FAT32.
I would advise you to convert them ASAP in NTFS format, which is much more robust, using the convert command : open a dos window (Start/execute/type cmd) type 'Dir X:' note X: label type 'Convert X: /FS:NTFS' enter X: label
No need to reformat your HDD.
The only drawback is that you lose the possibility to connect easily to a Win98 machine or a Mac.

JkDefrag v3 Forum / Bugs and problems / Problem when targeting disk root directory
|

Hi,
I have observed a possible problem when using JkDefrag, both with 3.6 and 3.7, in the following situation:
I have defined a Total Commander Button which launches the following command :
JkDefrag -a 2 "%P" where %P is the current source dir, with a '\' at the end. That is, when the current selected dir is 'C:\Windows', the %P string equals to 'C:\Windows\'
It seems that this added '\' has a consequence when the selected dir is a root dir of a disk. In that case I observed JkDefrag just launches the graphic window and finished instantly.
I was able to reproduce this on a command line :
JkDefrag -a 2 "C:\" does nothing (except displaying the file layout) JkDefrag -a 2 "C:" works as intented and defrags all files from C:
When it's a subfolder there is no difference.
Is it normal ? If not, could this be fixed so that C:\ and C: are handled the same way.
Thanks !

I finally decided to use Active File Recovery against other solution. It was the only one that recovered the directory structure. GetDataBack was unable to find any file.
Thanks for pointing out this solution.

Actually now I rather use the "-a 2" parameter instead of "-a 3", since optimization tends to move a lot of files, which is bad when doing differential backup based on sector analysis (I am using Drive Snapshot).
If one want to decide each time the TC button is pressed, the syntax is : <? -a 2 "%P"> (without the <>). TC then asks for a confirmation of the parameter and it's easy to change the 2 into something else.

Hi,
I'd like to know if JkDefrag, during the optimize process, does something special to the mirror of the MFT of a NTFS partition ? Or is it the OS/filesystem that only manages these areas ?
Why this question : I had the bad luck of having an external HDD crash yesterday, which had been optimized a few days before by JkDefrag. It seems to have been a software crash (HDD surface still OK). There were two primary partitions on the HDD, and both have lost their $MFT and $MFTmirror, so even chkdsk is unable to correct anything.
I hope this is just bad luck, and had nothing to to with JkDefrag, but just in case, I'd like to be sure...

I just found out a way to use JkDefrag in a nice and easy way, making the most of one of its interesting feature, namely the fact it can defrag a folder (and subfolders) while optimizing as much as possible the new file layout.
If you happen to use Total Commander (TC), you can assign a button from the button bar like this : Command : C:\Program Files\Divers\JkDefrag\JKDefrag.exe [path depends on where you have JkDefrag.exe] Parameters : -a 3 "%P" [%P is replaced by the path of the currently active TC pane] Start Path :[leave empty] Icon : [pick the one from JkDefragGUI]
When done, go into any folder you wish to defrag (incl. subfolders) within TC, click on the newly assign button, et voilą !
Nothing revolutionary here, I simply find it convenient.

Just to be sure <majoMo> : did you use "-a4" ou "-a 4" as parameter ? I think the -a4 is not recognized, a space is really needed between a and 4. I don't think such parameter entry errors are actually pointed out to the user, so one can be mistaken about which option is really used. Maybe Jeroen can confirm this.
Also regarding contig, it is nice indeed, especially with the "Power Defragmenter GUI", but it has a text interface only and the progress is slowed down by the files being listed, also there is no real progress indicator. So my vote goes to JkDefrag !
